An old chunky tangled bracelet was once the form of these new signet rings. The bracelet was tangled and no longer able to be worn so my customer wanted me to remodel them in to signet rings for her and her children. We choose this rounded square signet ring shape and I carved a sample from wax so she could see the vision start to come to life. We then proceeded and I hand cast in my little shed these signets from the wax model. I use a method called sand casting, which involves making an impression of the ring in the sand and then filling it with molten metal (Unfortunately, not quite as easy as it sounds!). This sometimes takes many attempts and it can be a case of trial and error!

Upon successful casting it takes a good few hours to tidy up the castings and make them look pretty. I then slowly increase the grade of sandpaper I use to make them even smoother before polishing the rings. It is then time for the final step- engraving! I do this all by hand using sharp tools to create the marks in the rings. It proved tricky to then re-create this on 3 rings so that they’re exactly the same. Although they’re not all 100% the same I think this adds a unique element to each ring.
